In a tragic turn of events, Malawi’s Vice President, Dr. Saulos Klaus Chilima, along with his wife and eight other individuals, lost their lives in a devastating plane crash on June 10, 2024. The military aircraft, which was en route to a funeral, crashed in the Chikangawa mountain range, leading to the untimely demise of all on board.

The incident has sent shockwaves throughout the nation, prompting President Lazarus Chakwera to declare a national day of mourning. In a heartfelt address to the nation, President Chakwera expressed his deep sorrow and emphasized the significant loss to the country. He mentioned that the search and rescue teams found the “completely destroyed” wreckage of the plane near a hill in Malawi’s Chikangawa forest.

The plane crash occurred after the aircraft took off from the capital, Lilongwe, and was headed to Mzuzu airport. Due to poor visibility, the pilot was advised to return to Lilongwe, but the plane disappeared from radar shortly after. The search operation, which included technological support from several countries, continued until the wreckage was found.
