US Leverage and Israel’s Response

The United States, known for its significant influence over Israel, has found its advice largely disregarded amidst the ongoing conflict in Gaza. Despite the US government’s “ironclad” support for Israel’s war against Hamas, concerns have been raised about the Israeli military’s failure to protect civilians and the restricted humanitarian access to Gaza’s populace.

Over the past seven months, the US has escalated its pressure on Israel, shifting from private advice to public warnings, and even sanctioning Israeli settlers in the West Bank. A pivotal moment came with President Joe Biden’s stern call to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, threatening to reduce US support if aid lorries were not allowed into Gaza.

Bomb Diplomacy: The US’s Tactical Pause

In an unprecedented move, the Biden administration has delayed a shipment of bombs to Israel, signaling a potential shift in US policy. This pause includes thousands of 2000lb bombs and a review of other weapons sales, such as precision-guided munitions equipment.

The delay is seen as a response to a proposed Israeli military operation in Rafah, which the US fears could lead to civilian casualties and a humanitarian crisis. By withholding the bombs, the US reinforces its stance against an attack on Rafah, with one official describing it as a “shot across the bow.”

Furthermore, the US aims to maintain pressure on Israel to support a ceasefire with Hamas, while domestic politics also play a role, with President Biden facing pressure to temper his support for Israel during an election year.

The decision to withhold military support carries risks, as Israel may disregard the US’s stance, trusting in long-term military support regardless of immediate actions.
