First, consider how the Knight moves. Notice that if you place a Knight on a chessboard, the spots where it can move form a SQUARE on the chessboard. Also note that the Knight always moves from a Black to a White; then a White to a Black. This can help you visualize not only your own Knight’s possibilities, but your opponent’s as well.

Second, watch for forks. These can be very powerful advance moves; especially if you can catch the King in the Fork.

Third, as a rule of thumb, compare it to the Bishop. The Bishop must stay on its own color and can traverse the entire board. The Knight, on the other hand, can alternate between the two colored squares and can hop over other pieces. This makes the Knight slightly more valuable in the beginning stages of the game when the board crowded; and slightly less valuable later in the game, when the pieces start to come off.

Fourth, beware of overburdening the Knight; its easy to do as, with its forking ability, it can defend more than one pieces. However, once that Knight counter-captures, the other piece it was defending is now vulnerable and might even be hanging, causing you to be down a piece or pawn when the exchange is complete. Be careful of this.

Fifth, keep the Knight near the center of the board and away from the edge. Remember the Square above? The closer to the edge you have the Knight, the less squares it can cover; thus the less effective it is; thus the less its doing for you.
