“In the past, we were more lenient about letting people stay, but we cannot afford that this time,” Gualtieri explained. “This storm is too dangerous, and we won’t repeat the tragedy we saw just two weeks ago.”

Although the area has narrowly avoided severe direct hits in recent years — including near-misses with hurricanes Helene and Idalia — Milton could be the first Category 3 or stronger hurricane to strike the region directly in over a century.

In response to the escalating threat, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis declared a state of emergency for 51 counties over the weekend, including Pinellas, Hillsborough, and Miami-Dade. He also called back National Guard and State Guard personnel who had been aiding recovery efforts for Helene.
