The image quickly caught attention and was reposted by former President Donald Trump on his Truth Social platform, where he expressed his appreciation for the support, stating, “It is a Great Honor to have your Endorsement. I look forward to meeting you soon!” However, what caught further attention was the fact that one of the individuals wearing the T-shirts shares a family connection with Tim Walz, the Democratic vice presidential nominee.
On Facebook, Jeff Walz wrote that his brother was “not the type of character you want making decisions about your future.” He added that he “thought long and hard” about publicly backing Trump but told NewsNation that he doesn’t want to be engaged politically.
Tim Walz’s sister, when shown the photo, admitted that she didn’t recognize the people wearing the T-shirts and was unsure of their connection. This prompted further investigation into who the individuals were. It was later revealed that the group in the photo are actually distant relatives of Tim Walz. According to Rod Edwards, the spokesperson for Charles Herbster, a former Nebraska gubernatorial candidate and strong Trump supporter, the people in the photo are indeed cousins of Tim Walz.
Herbster, who had previously received Donald Trump’s endorsement during his 2022 gubernatorial campaign, had initially posted the photo on X (formerly known as Twitter). Edwards clarified the family ties, explaining that the individuals in the photo are descendants of Francis Walz, who was the brother of Tim Walz’s grandfather. Despite not being in close contact with Tim Walz, the group shares a distant family connection through their mutual ancestor.
The family themselves later confirmed this relationship in a text message to The Associated Press, verifying that they are indeed distant cousins of the Minnesota governor, who is currently Kamala Harris’s running mate on the Democratic ticket for vice president. This revelation has added a layer of intrigue to the story, showcasing how distant relatives can sometimes have differing political views despite sharing the same lineage, with this particular family group publicly supporting Donald Trump, while their cousin Tim Walz is running on the Democratic ticket.
